1. History
Cyber Air Virtual Airlines was founded by William D. Alderson and began operations in October 1994 in the FSFORUM of Compuserve Information Service. In 1996, Cyber Air expanded its operations to the Internet and World Wide Web providing passenger and cargo operations worldwide.
In Early 2006 Cyber Air began transformation to a new website along with developing new airline management systems to stay competitive in the virtual airline community and continue to grow as an airline.
2. Our mission
Our Mission is to provide, for the simulation pilot, an environment in which the individual can experience, learn and have fun while conducting basic and advanced piloting skills using Microsoft flight simulation software. Provide a professional and entertaining environment in which individuals can feel part of a family along-side fellow flight sim enthusiasts and a portal to experience the world of virtual aviation.
Cyber Air does not discriminate based on sex, race, age, gender, or physical abilities. We are always looking for fun, hard working, and ambitious people to join our team.
3. Requirements
- You must have a valid internet e-mail address and have a copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002/2004 installed. If you don't have flight simulator, you can purchase it at any leading computer store or online store.
- You should be able to install related flight simulator software and programs offered by Cyber Air and affiliates. If you need help installing software you may seek assistance in our forums.
- You should be able to fly (takeoff, navigate, and land) in flight simulator. If you are not able to, we recommend that you read the tutorials which are located within the flight simulator program or read the navigation, landing, and takeoff pages in your flight simulator manual.
- There are no minimums for the amount of hours a pilot puts in, but we do ask that you complete at least one round trip flight per month.
- File flight reports(PIREP) for the flights you complete. (You must file AT LEAST ONE flight report each month to stay active as a pilot for us, however, you are more than welcome to fly more flights if you choose to do so). The flight report form is available on your hub's main webpage under the link "File PIREP". We also request that your hub captain be notified if you will be inactive for any amount of time.
- Although its' use is not required, VATSIM, HOVERCONTROL are highly encouraged and used at Cyber Air for online flying. If you are not familiar with VATSIM or HOVERCONTROL, please take the time to visit each network to get information on registration, network rules and documention.
- Fill out the Pilot Application. During sign-up you will be given two choices of a hub assignment. Every effort will be made to place you in the hub of your choice. Pilots may also request a hub change at any time during their career.
4. Downloading our software
Cyber Air has a large variety of aircraft, sceneries, effects, flightplans, available for download in our hangars. Downloadable software are available for FS2002, and FS2004 versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Each download comes with either it's own installer program or files for manual installation along with installation help documention.
5. Hubs and Operations
Cyber Air operates from a headquarters at Skunk Field (KCSW), located in Sterling, Illinois about 76 miles due west of Chicago, IL. Cyber Air operates hubs in the following cities -
- Chicago, IL (KORD)
- Dallas/Ft Worth, TX (KDFW)
- London, UK (EGLL)
- Munich, Germany (EDDM)
- New York, NY (KJFK)
- San Francisco, CA (KSFO)
- Sydney (YSSY)
- Johannesburg (FAJS)
Cyber Air also has two other divisions operating independently from the above hubs.
The Disaster Air Relief Team (DART)
Division of Cyber Air has been contracted by the US Government to provide a "First Response" airlift capacity when disasters occur worldwide. DART bases are currently at Washington Dulles (KIAD), Los Angeles (KLAX) and Amsterdam Schiphol (EHAM). Cyber Air pilots from all hubs have the ability to fly DART missions.
Search and Rescue(SAR)
Operates along side DART for immediate area support. SAR also contracts independent roles. Some examples are (Fire support, airlift rescue, insertion, EMS evac) We operate out of many different airports, bases, and can setup immediate base camps where needed at a moments notices.
6. Flight Regulations
Pilots are required to log one flight every 30 days to remain acitve. After 30 days, you will be automatically marked inactive and be moved to your hubs inactive roster listing. If you are inactive for more than 3 months you will be deleted. If you plan to remain inactive for greater than 30 days, you must request an LOA (Leave of Absence).
LOAs: (Leave of Absences) are approved by Hub Captains for a maximum period of six (6) months. After the six month term, the pilot may contact the Hub Captain and request that the LOA be extended an additional six months if nescessary. Any pilot who fails to make contact with their hub staff after the initial six month period has expired will be changed to an "active" status with or without prior notification. After this takes place, the pilot will have 30 days to file a flight report. In the event that a flight report is not filed in this 30 day period, the pilot runs the risk of being terminated from the airline by the automated Pilot Report (PIREP) system, unless the pilot makes contact with his or her Hub Captain.
Flying greater than 1X time: "ALL" flights that are logged are to be flown at 1X time only. The only exception to this rule is to catch up to where you were after a computer or flightsim lockup, VATSIM approved clearance of airspace restrictions(See VATSIM Rule for details), offline flying on your own time.
Flight Training: Pilot are not required to take flight tests for any aircraft or level. But if a pilot would like to learn and become proficent in type aircraft may visit our training page of website to seek helpful information or contact our staff for flight instruction.
Note: In the future various training programs for all levels will be offered. When software easily allows joint operations in the cockpit.
Flying Offline or Online: Pilots may fly and log their hours offline or online. We do not require a pilot to fly online, but we do encourage to give it a try. The online experience can be very rewarding giving the pilot a realistic flight environment to conduct fights.
Network Flying: Pilots flying online Networks (Vatsim, Hovercontrol) must abide by the rules set forth by that Networks. Pilots flying on these networks under the Cyber Air name should act in a professional manner while having control of the their aircraft to abide by the rules set forth by the Network they are flying. Pilot that are reported to Cyber Air admin or Network admin conducting less than satifactory behavior will be terminated.
7. Flights, Assignments, and Inter-Hub Flying(codeshare)
Pilots are to plan their own flights using the resources offered at Cyber Air website and WWW. Pilots may fly any routes offered by their respective hubs. All hub schedules are available either on the website or downloadable formats. Codesharing is allowed between hubs. Pilots may also freely fly their own routes.
Assignments: Cyber Air Hub Captains(staff) may elect to assign routes or schedules to their pilots. Check with your Hub Capt. for details. Each hub has their own set of instruction for schedules and flight practices.
Once a pilot chooses a route or assignment they should fill-out their respective hub "Bid Form" This indicates to the staff they are active. Staff will then either send confirmation back to the pilot or post flight details on the roster indicating the route has been approved for flight and any other NOTAMS they should be aware of.
Codesharing: Codesharing is also allowed and another way of connecting schedules between hubs. Example: If a pilot from Denver flies to another Cyber Hub like Chicago. They may elect to fly 1 of the schedule/routes from Chicago hub. Then once completing Chicago route can continue with their original route.
Note: Until future upgrades of the PIREP system allowing codesharing and proper credited hours to specific hub. Pilot are only required to fill-out their own hub PIREP for flights. In the future their will be a spot on PIREP form for this.
8. Reporting System(PIREP)
Cyber Air requires every pilot to complete a flight report once they have completed the assignment by filling out the flight report form online found at your hub's website or module which works inside flight simulator. More about the PIREP system and module can be found at sf-games.com.
Note: The current APU(Automated PIREP system), VAPN(Flight Simulator Module) are still in development and in future will become 1 cenetralized system called VAMS(Virtual airline management system) Which will give the pilot immediate required information and tools built for the operations of Cyber. The goal here is create more realistic operations(Flight lines, schedules, ranks, income, and other airline duties) easily accessible to the pilot.
The flight report forms are automated and require that you enter your pilot number, Hub ID (CYB####) and password to enter. Input requires a flight number, Departure time in UTC, type aircraft flown, departure and arrival cities, your hours and minutes, fuel, pax, cargo, and additonal comments to complete your Report. Flight reports forms can be found at each hub webpage under the link "File PIREP".
9. VATSIM, HoverControl and Multiplayer Flying
Cyber Air encourages the use of VATSIM and HoverControl for online flying. This allow our pilots to experience as "Real as it gets".
VATSIM (Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network): provides real time ATC control over the internet. This allows a pilot to fly online in real time with other pilots and receive real time ATC control. When flying online VATSIM please use the Prefix - "CYB" + your pilot ID number(CYB####) this three letter code idenifies your as a pilot flying for Cyber Air Virtual airlines.
HoverControl: Provides a place for helicopters pilots to fly online in real time with other pilots. HoverControl also offers training courses for helicopter pilots wishing to learn more about helicopter flight and principals. Pilot ID's for flying on Hovercontrol will start with "HC" and are setup by the policies of Hovercontrol.
For connecting to VATSIM or Hovercontrol Network you will need the software FSINN. FSINN is free for download from their website and comes with it's own documention
on how to use. If a pilot needs help with setups of this software they may post at respective website above or here at Cyber Air.
We encourage the use of flying online with VATSIM, HoverControl however you DO NOT have to fly online in order to participate in Cyber Air.
10. Additional Pilot Programs and Resources
There are many programs, add-ons, and resources available to a pilot on the WWW. I'm only going to talk about a few briefly that we use regularly at Cyber Air. If you would like to find-out more information about these and other programs for Flight Simulator you may browser our community links located in Cyber Air forums or use site search.
- Eurobook: Eurobook is used in conjuction with online flying and the VATSIM network. It allows the pilot to book their flights get flight details, and earn points for the airline. Eurobook also notifies ATC thru prefiling flightplans with VATSIM network. This brings Pilots and ATC together and makes flying online more enjoyable.
Cyber Air is registered airline of the Eurobook system. Pilots wishing to join the eurobook system and use it's features offered must register at Eurobook website. During registration you will be asked which airline you would like to sign-up for. Choose Cyber Air. After registration you will receive a confirmation back from Cyber Air stating your acceptance and any other details that may apply. More details about using eurobook can be found here.
- Euroroute: Euroroute supplies routing software and quick access at prefiling a flight plan with VATSIM. If your looking for a route you may input your DEP/ARR ICAO airport codes to find routes available in the system. Cyber Air is also registered with Euroroute, and future implemention of this system and routes will be coming in the future. For now each hub has a link called "hot routes". Hot Routes was setup to give pilots flying out of that hub a quick choice at finding routes. The system is displayed to show the top 10 newest routes available. If you use the search feature you may find additional routes.
Note: All though both the above systems were created for european operation they may also be used by United States pilots. Cyber Air's United States hub divisions are 1 of the first to use these systems outside europe for flight planning. Through our use and other United States carriers use. Information will added to the Euro databases. This will allow many more options, routes, and features in the future for pilots.
- Group flights: Cyber Air participates in many different group flight activities online. Please visit the forums for more details.
